15 KB Lavender Town Tone !!2kgyB/tJ0 No.3762666
When "Pokemon" was first released in Japan, there was an odd phenomenon between children ages 7-12, particularly in those using headphones to listen to the sound effects. Increase of nosebleeds, irritability, insomnia, and addiction to the game, playing for hours and hours on end and crying to the point of vomiting when the opportunity was taken away.

Roughly 70% of these cases ended in suicide.

In almost every case of the aforementioned symptoms, despite gameplay time recorded to the limit of the internal clock, the game had not progressed further than "Lavender Town".

A closer analysis of the game revealed a tone in the audio of the music for "Lavender Town" at a pitch undetectable by fully developed human ear drums. Within weeks every unsold copy of the "first edition" the game were recalled silently and the game was re-released with re-mastered audio for "Lavender Town".

The widely known version is said to be missing three extra tones, as well as the unique, binaural tone of the first edition, although this is unconfirmed due to the rarity of working first edition copies; in the known few that remain, the internal clock and 'battery save' have all timed out and ceased function, and in many cases the game will freeze upon entering any battle.

The details of the story began to be passed around in mid 1997, said to originate from http://www.cornus.lensig.net/index538a.html, a defunct URL without credibility.

YouTube embed is the widely known second edition version of the "Lavender Town" song, if you don't remember how it sounds or never have known.

Overview [$OVR]
The phenomenon of the "Lavender Town Tone" is a legend that involves a bizarre spate of medical cases and deaths from around the country that have been connected to the "Pocket Monsters" (Pokémon) series of games, in particular the first two games of the series, "Red" and "Green". Though the event is largely unheard of due to disclosure laws for companies based in the Kyoto Prefecture, there is a large amount of information that has been brought into the open by a number of dedicated individuals, including 関 内直 (Seki Uchitada) 伊勢 満朝 (Ise Mitsutomo) and 佐藤 治情 (Satou Harue), to whom this page is dedicated. Thanks also go out to 安藤 景忠 (Andou Kagetada) for providing images and animated .gifs of the visual phenomena.
This analysis will discuss the other phenomena that is often confused with the "Lavender Town Tone", known as "White Hand Sprite", "Ghost Animation" and "buried alive model", as well as the semi-related developer-tag that was inserted into the game, and how to safely perform these "easter eggs" in post-first wave cartridges.

History of the Game [$HIG]
The first cases of the "Lavender Town Tone" and associated events were reported a few months after the release of of "Pocket Monsters Red and Green" for the handheld "Game Boy" videogame console. These videogames were wildly popular with children between the ages of seven and twelve (their core demographic), which was no doubt one of the reasons why the "Lavender Town Tone" had the level of severity that it did. In the game, the player takes on the role of a "Trainer", whose task it is to capture, tame and train wild creatures called "Pocket Monsters" for battle. These games, and the two newest additions to the series, "Pocket Monsters Gold and Silver", an anime, manga, figurines, a collectible card-game and home console games have resulted in Pocket Monsters becoming a multi-billion dollar franchise.
In one part of the game, the Trainer comes to a small, out-of-the-way place called "Lavender Town" (シオンタウン). This town is one of the smallest hamlets in the game (aside from the Trainer's own home town), and possesses very few of the services available to the Trainer in every other city in the game - indeed, the location would be unremarkable were it not for the "Pokémon Tower" (ポケモンタワー) located there - a colossal building that holds the graves of hundreds of deceased Pokémon.
It is theorised that, because of this location in the game, at least two hundred children lost their lives, and many more developed sudden illnesses and afflictons - and this does not consider the vast waves of unreported illnesses or deaths whose cause went unnoticed.

History of the Pathology [$HIP]
It was not until Spring/Summer of 1996 that the cases that would eventually become linked to the Lavender Town Tone began to surface. The earliest record of the acknowledgement of the effects of the Lavender Town Town that the author could find came from an internal report made in June 1996 by the company Game Freak Inc. (株式会社ゲームフリーク), which was then leaked by one of its former employees, Ms. Satou Harue. In it, an employee gives a list of names, dates and symptoms - records of children between the ages of 7 and 12 who had suffered various medical problems as a result of playing Pocket Monsters Red and Green versions. Some records are listed below, with the full listing in Appendix A [here]. (It should be noted that entries in the Appendix also include symptoms borne not from the "Lavender Town Tone" [an audio phenomenon] but from the so-called "White Hand Sprite", "Ghost Animation" and "buried alive model", all of which were visual phenomena that provoked similar but distinct symptoms. More details on Part Two [here]).
>> Lavender Town Tone !!2kgyB/tJ0 03/10/10(Wed)16:06 No.3762685
京极 勝女; April 12 1996 (11). Obstructive sleep apnea, severe migraines, otorrhagia, tinnitus.
千葉 広幸: May 23 1996 (12). General irritability, insomnia, addiction to videogame, nosebleeds. Developed into violent streaks against others and eventually himself. [自殺]
桃井 久江: April 27 1996 (11). Cluster headaches, irritability. Eventually took mixed painkillers. [自殺]
吉長 為真: March 4 1996 (7). Migraines, sluggish and slow behaviour, unresponsiveness. Developed into deafness, and went missing. Body discovered beside road April 20 1996. [死出]

The document that was circulated internally was the first time that these incidents had been connected with the Pocket Monsters videogames - until then, the cause had not been discovered or diagnosed by medical professionals. Indeed, it is uncertain how the company themselves managed to find the cases related to the event without seeking advice from health services.

Pathology Detail -- "Lavender Town Tone" [$PAT]
The predominant symptoms related to what would become known as the "Lavender Town Town" included headaches and migraines, bleeding from eyes and ears, mood swings and irritability, addiction to the games, unprovoked violence, withdrawal and unresponsiveness, and in approximately 67% of cases, suicidal tendencies. However, these symptoms only manifested in children between the ages of 7 and 12 years old who had reached the area in game known as "Lavender Town", most of whom were revealed to have been wearing headphones or earphones while playing the game (see Appendix A [here]).
As it turns out, the developers of the Lavender Town area had sought to make an area that would "leave an impression on the player", according to Seki Uchitada, who was a member of the development team. Seki claimed that at the time of development, a number of the team were interested in making Lavender Town a little different to the rest of the game.

>> Lavender Town Tone !!2kgyB/tJ0 03/10/10(Wed)16:07 No.3762690
"The Pokémon Tower is a visible result of that," Seki told ゲームの次元 ("Game's Dimensions" Magazine) in an interview earlier this year. "That, and the fact that Lavender Town is so different from all the other cities in the game: it is smaller, it has fewer people occupying it, it didn't have a gym... and, of course, the music was very, very eerie. In fact, in the first version of the game, we were told to slightly change the song played in the background of Lavender Town ... because our manager told us it would make children upset. The music used in subsequent versions is different."
Either Seki was unaware of the full impact of the Lavender Town Tone, or was vastly underexaggerating how "upset" children would get - no more is said of the music in the article, but there are mentions of Lavender Town's other macabre features (see below).
>> Lavender Town Tone !!2kgyB/tJ0 03/10/10(Wed)16:07 No.3762692
What Seki failed to disclose to Game's Dimensions Magazine was that the music used in the first-wave release of Pocket Monsters Red and Green was formulated out of an experiment in "binaural beats": using slightly different frequencies of sound, each frequency played in one ear through earphones or headphones, various psychological effects can be induced upon the listener. In most versions of the first wave releases, this resulted in the player feeling uneasy, apprehensive, and mildly disturbed. However, for upwards of two-hundred children, it provoked a variety of disturbances in the brain that went undetected purely because it was undetectable by fully developed human ears - instead, only children fell victim to the tones , resulting in psychological and physiological problems that in some cases led to death - many of which were suicides.

However, the "Lavender Town Tone" only accounts for some of the problems that afflicted those unlucky enough to get first wave cartridges. Though they are not as well known, there are a variety of visual effects used in Lavender Town that also brought about severe medical issues in children, some of which are still capable of being produced in games after the first wave.

Nothing to do with the Lavender Town Tone, but...

In the original Pokémon Red/Blue, when you encounter your rival in Lavender Town he asks whether or not you know what it's like to have one of your Pokémon die. At this point in the game, he no longer has his Raticate that he used in previous battles.

Your rival battle before this took place aboard the S.S. Anne. Your rival's Raticate sustained serious injuries from the battle...but, because crowding and confusion on the luxury liner, he was unable to make it to a Pokémon Center in time and the Raticate passed away. The real reason your rival is in Lavender Town to begin with is to lay his deceased friend to rest.

Despite all of this, your rival never outwardly tells you that you're responsible for the death of his Pokémon. He hides his grief and instead channels that energy into the motivation he needed to continue his quest to become Indigo League Champion. The death of his Raticate effectively destroys your rival's impish, childhood innocence. Although he tells himself that he doesn't hold you responsible, he subconsciously holds a great deal of resentment towards you which further fuels his ambitions.

Tearfully swearing upon his Raticate's grave to not fail in what he set out to do, he trains hard in hopes of becoming better than you...defeating you...and to eventually make it to the Pokémon League.

Mere moments after he became Indigo League champion, he was defeated...by you. Although he fulfilled his promise to his fallen Pokémon, it was only for a painfully brief instant.

In the end, your rival is scolded by his grandfather while you receive the professor's praise. During the course of the game, you steal your rival's innocence, crush his dreams, and ultimately snatch away the love of his own grandfather.

How does this make you feel?

Not at all. As I said, the details on the White Hand Sprite are few and far between. I've sent emails to a few "victims" of these supposed phenomena. I'm a skeptic, believe me. I'm waiting on replies from three of the four people I attempted to contact. The one who already responded told me that to think back to when he experienced those events is too hard for him, and he refuses to give me any information. Btw, the only reason I'm so interested in this, is because I'm using it as a topic for my psychology report this term. If I can find enough information, I'll do it on the actual event. If not, I'll talk about how a simple internet myth can spawn such interest.

Have you heard about the "lost" Golden Girls episode? It was called "Dead Rose" and was going to be aired in the 3rd series but was dropped and replaced with "The Housekeeper". According to the rumours, Dorothy comes home with a bag and Sophia asks "What's in the bag?" to which she replies "You're an old bag" and the audience laughs. Every time Rose appears in the episode the back lighting becomes dimmer and dimmer and Rose begins to speak slower and slower, her facial features melting and twisting in the darkness. Eventually, the scene switches to the 3 Golden Girls standing around Rose's grave in the graveyard, mourning. Apparently Blanche tells a joke at this part but it's too quiet to hear and you can't read her lips. Later, they're sitting at the table eating a cheesecake and they begin crying and screaming about Rose being dead. Their crying turns into horrible wailing and eventually a bloodcurdling scream as the background colours begin to warp and change until everything is red and the audience laughter gets louder and louder until it is like rushing through a tunnel at high speed. The episode ends here with static playing for the last 5 minutes. The original was destroyed but a copy was made before its destruction, but no-one knows who has it.

A white hand that appears randomly in a town that is full of ghosts and has a spooky tune to it? Any kid between a certain age would be convinced that it was just a part of the game itself.
How can it do any serious damage? And "victims"? I highly doubt you sent any e-mails to any real "victims". Maybe some people who have claimed to be screwed over but they're faking it.

During the first few days of the release of Pokemon Red and Green in Japan, back in February 27, 1996, a peak of deaths appeared in the age group of 10-15.

The children were usually found dead through suicide, usually by hanging or jumping from heights. However, some were more odd. A few cases recorded children who had began sawing off their limbs, others sticking their faces inside the oven, and chocked themselves on their own fist, shoving their own arms down their throat.

The few children who were saved before killing themselves showed sporadic behavior. When asked why they were going to hurt themselves they only answered in chaotic screams and scratched at their own eyes. When showed what seemed to be the connection to this attitude, the gameboy, they had no response, but when combined with either Pokemon Red or Green, the screams would continue, and they would do their best to leave the room it was located in.

It had been a couple of months after the original children suicides and the death rate had dropped dramatically. [...] They had began to think that maybe Takenori was right and it was all just a very odd coincidence or mass hysteria... Until they received the letter. [...]

It was a letter written by Chiro himself [...] It started off quite formal, a hello, how are you, regards to the family, and such. After one or two of these normal paragraphs, they reached a section that requested Nisino to get him into the game team, to get him a programming position in Pokemon Red and Green.

As the letter continued, the handwriting seemed to grow more jittery. He talked about a glorious idea he had, a way to program something unseen in any game before. He said it would certainly revolutionize not only the gaming industry, but everyone. He went on to say that it was a very simple procedure to program this idea into the game. He did not even have to add any foreign programming, but could use what was already given in the game itself. This would, the detectives agreed, make it impossible to notice any obscurities in the programming itself. It was a perfect way to hide whatever this was.

The letter ended abruptly. There was no goodbye, no say hi to the family, no write back, or thank you. Nothing like that. It was just his name, written hard in the letter where the paper almost broke through. It was only his name. Chiro Miura.

Just pointing this out, but in pokemon gen3 and 4, there are sprites that will hop out of the ground when you pass them and challenge you to a battle. In other terms, they are buried alive.

Anyone hear about the lost episode of Taxi???

It was called 'Death Cab', and it started off with distorted and grainy footage of what looked like the garage. Occasionally viewable amongst the fuzzy and interrupted black and white picture (with occasional hints of dark red and green) are what looks like Danny DeVito pointing aimlessly across the set, seemingly at nothing, followed by several minutes of silent black screen.
Suddenly there is another blurry looping image of what looks like Tony Danza and Andy Kaufman lying still on the floor in coffin-like, arms-crossed pose, with Christopher Lloyd standing over them as if about to kneel down, before the clip suddenly loops, meanwhile Judd Hirsch is crouched motionless over a table with his arms hanging vertically and eyes wide open staring right towards you, as though he sees you, and Marilu Henner is sitting in a taxi, crying uncontrollably, amid detuned disjointed theme music and an unhuman and excessively loud screaming throughout. Suddenly it cuts out and there is a strange image of a slightly opened door that seems to go on for several minutes, before it all comes to an abrupt end

The producers refuse to ever discuss the existence of the episode, instead attempting to laugh off the question whenever it is brought up, though many claim that the question leaves those involved rattled and nervous

One person refused to speak. Also, as you know Mr.Internet Authority on Everything, as a human being grows older, we loose the ability to hear many tones and frequencies. It is not un-reasonable that this tone only effects younger children. For a modern day example, the annoying ass mosquito ring tone.

Totally super cool story bro: they are the Ninja Boy class, and the Tone apparently only affects children.

Most of them also use Ninjask, which is in the same evolution family as Shedinja, which is rumored that if a human peers into its back, the human's soul will be stolen.

But I do like Pokemon having lovecraftian influences. Stuff that is so fundamentally wrong that the brain can't comprehend. Like Missigno.

Drifloon is made from souls of departed pokemon and people and tries to spirit people to the underworld, Banette is an abandoned toy trying to gain revenge on its owner, stuff like that.

And Darkrai. This fucker can kill by sending you nightmares. Do you know how fucked up a nightmare has to be to physically harm you?

And then you have the new pokemon (pic related) they revealed the odd week or so ago, which can apparently shapeshift into stuff. Even though Ditto can already do that.

But that's not as creepy as Spoink, who if it stops bouncing, will die.

Anyone hear about the lost episode of Friends??

The story goes that throughout the recording of the episode, not one member of the audience laughed, and the canned laughter machine was not working for some mysterious reason. At one point it got so bad that Rachel Aniston began stripping off, followed by a foul-mouthed tirade from the guy who played the tall geeky guy aimed at his co-stars and eventually the crowd, resulting in an on-set riot that caused $83 worth of damage and multiple deaths

Or so the story goes...

Have you heard about the "lost" Home Movies episode? It was called "Dead Melissa" and was going to be aired in the 3rd series but was dropped and replaced with "Coffins and Cradles". According to the rumours, Brendon comes home with a bag and Paula asks "What's in the bag?" to which he replies "You're an old bag". Every time Melissa appears in the episode the back lighting becomes dimmer and dimmer and Melissa begins to speak slower and slower, her facial features melting and becoming more and more squiggly, more than usual. Eventually, the scene switches to Brendon and Jason standing around Melissa's grave in the graveyard, mourning. Apparently Jason tells a joke at this part but it's too quiet to hear and you can't read his lips. Later, they're sitting at the table eating a cheesecake and they begin crying and screaming about Melissa being dead.

Have you heard about that lost Frasier episode? It was called "Dead Daphne" and begins with Frasier walking into his apartment with a bag and his father asks "What's in the bag?" to which he replies "Another old bag" and the audience laughs. Daphne does not appear in this episode although every time the bag is on-screen the back lighting becomes dimmer and dimmer, the bag appearing to move as if something was inside in the darkness. There is a split second transition of the actress who played Daphne dead with her neck cut open wide, blood streaming down her chest which ends with Frasier, his brother and his father standing mourning at Daphne's graveside. Apparently the dog barks at something non-existent at this part but he's too small and the camera does not focus on him. Later, they're sitting on the balcony when they begin crying and screaming about Daphne being dead, their cries turning into horrible shrieks and eventually a bloodcurdling wail as the audience laughter gets louder and louder until it is like rushing through a tunnel at high speed. The episode ends 5 minutes short with static for the remaining time, but if you look closely, every 30 seconds there is a flash of Dead Daphne, her slit throat opening wider and wider and a loud scream begins just as the episode cuts off.

children's ears can detect higher frecuencies than adults. Read about it on wikipedia. Small children can hear more things than teenagers, and much more than adults.

For example, most of us can, or could, be able to hear when a TV is on or turned on, even on mute, because it emits some high pitched noise. Most adults can't, because with age, you lose the ability to hear such high frequencies.

The Gameboy is incapable of producing a tone out of audible range by humans. In fact, it's restricted to far less than what a human can hear. Furthermore, it can only generate square waves and white noise, neither of which can harm a human at any pitch beyond amplitude-related damages associated with all sound. The promgrammable PCM wave is also bound by the same frequency restrictions, and is incapable of producing a timbre harmful to humans- mainly because there is no such thing.

That such a thing was never replicated after the GameBoy line was hacked and made common as an instrument is all the proof you should need that this is bullshit, nowhere near plausible, and boring as sin.

You're failing to understand.
There is no point at which the frequency of a sound affects a human beyond their perception of it at a certain pitch. To make this plausible, it would have to be related to timbre- which it can't be, as the gamebody is extremely limited thus.

What's more, every pitch in Lavender town is fairly midrange compared to other Gameboy music- requiring the fiction "kid killing pitch" to have been massively out of tune with the song. Something jarring enough to be noticed by adults after the change. This is to say nothing of the fact that the main three lines of the song are at pitches and using timbres reused across multiple Gameboy songs.

So our "kid killing pitch" wouldn't have fit with the song and would have been noticed immediately after it's removal by adult players. It also would have needed to exploit some magical one-of-a-kind hardware failure in the gameboy's speaker, because nothing the device can generate is harmful in the way described.

This is bad and you should be ashamed for reposting it.

Hello ****,
I must say, I was quite surprised when I received your email. The fact that anyone even knew about what happened stunned me, let alone that someone showed a genuine interest in it. Now, let me start off by saying this, the Tone did not effect me the same way it effected others. I honestly believe that this is because I was scared after hearing it for about ten minutes, and turned the volume off. The noise had put me almost into a trance. I don't know why. I played a newer version of the game, with the same music, but no trance. I find this very strange. Now, onto the issue of the hand and the "Buried Alive Model" as you called it. First, I will address the hand. I was walking around the town, right outside of the tower, actually. And all of a sudden, a battle began on my screen. But there was no transition into it. The battle screen just appeared over the map. You could actually see details of the map in the battle screen. Where the opposing monster would be, there was simply what appeared to be a white glove, almost like one from the Mario games. Anyway, I tried to attack it, and the game returned an error, then the screen went dark for a moment. When the screen lit back up, I was inside the tower, on the top floor. When I tried to move my character, a series of garbled junk characters appeared in a text box, and the game shut down. For some reason, I was terrified to turn it back on.
>> Lavender Town Tone !!2kgyB/tJ0 03/10/10(Wed)18:27 No.3763711
I don't know why, but for a good three days, I could not turn that game back on! I finally did, out of sheer curiosity. I was back at Pallet Town, my whole game was gone! Except that I still had all my monsters. They were at level 0, and with 0 health, but could still battle. I eventually started a new game, for fear of corrupting my game data. When I finally got back to Lavender Town, I experienced the "Buried Alive Model", or at least I think that's what it was. I was progressing through the tower, no problem, when suddenly, I was back infront of the tower. I was confused, and tried to re-enter. When I walked through the door, I was in a very strange, distorted room.If you have ever seen Missing. No, the room looked similar to it's graphic. I tried to exit, but the game would not let me. I moved forward, and then it happened. I had turned the sound back on by this point, and the music became distorted, it almost sounded like a scream. Then, on the screen, one of the "ghost" sprites appeared, flashing in and out. I passed out for about a half hour at this point. I never picked the game up again. If you have anymore questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability.
Signed,
*****

Well, I think it sounds more like the "Ghost Animation". I dunno though. Also, I put ****'s where the names were.

This is pretty terrible, seeing as how we have copies of the 1rst edition pokemon red/green still playable, and I happen to actually KNOW what the white hand sprite was, it was no glitch, and didnt require any trick to get shown.

There's a guy in lavender town who asks you if you believe in ghosts, you can pick yes or no.

If you pick yes he goes wow, so some people do believe....

if you pick no he says, so whats that white hand on your shoulder?

in the original games, a sprite of a hand would appear behind the trainer during this, the trainer would turn around, do a little jump, and it would dissapear.

In the new ones, the kid just jokes saying, hah, it would of been neat if it had been there.

It's a joke, its a trick, and this copypasta wouldnt be so bad if the tripfag didnt take it so dreadfully serious.

When are you gonna be done playing make believe and trying your hardest to fool people into thinking its real?

Fuck you.

Love, /v/

While I must admit this is interesting as hell to me (avid gamer), it's not real. The story is one of the earliest allegories for the evils of video games. The fact they chose to use a foreign title (harder to verify the "evidence" this way) just made the argument "video games can kill/hurt/seduce to the dark side etc." more believable to the average 1990s parent when these handheld games were first coming out. The more outrageous the lies, the more likely they are going to be believed - much like the same
D&D hysteria of the late 70s /early 80s.
Still, fun stuff to read.
