Shame I'm unemployed, this is a pricey one I might buy. This and Artist Automaton (www.cool4cats.biz) are really the only two high dollar papercraft (more than $15) I could see breaking down and buying. If they are still for sale after I begin working again (probably will be awhile, next Christmas maybe), and no one else breaks down and does it, then I will.

Here is a blown up picture of the core. From what I've read the core isn't made of paper in the working model. Maybe someone could improvise.

Ok, I got this file which has like all the parts to it+instructions: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z5QNA3C1

However, they're all like .mtl, .obj, and .skp files.
I have no clue what to do with those, so if someone can convert them to like .pdo or pdf, that'd be cool
>> Anonymous 12/23/10(Thu)03:07 No.410825
The .obj are object files that can be imported into sketchup or another 3D app. The .mtl's are the materials (texture) for those files. The .skp are the sketchup 3d files. And there's already a bunch of Pdo's in there to start on.

Looks like 8 semi completed pieces of 12, didn't see the main box part yet. I believe that some of the pieces get reused in the design so that 8 of 12 gets bumped up a bit.

The main key right now is someone cleaning and working with that piece9 in the package. That looks to be the last main driver piece.

So I looked at this, but what I still don't understand is what goes on inside this gear. On the early video, the guy placed this gear on the pole leading to the box. After placing all the gears on the bevel gear, he was simply able to turn the box handle and rotate all the gears.
So are there more gears inside the bevel gear, or how does this work? Does anyone know?
>> dan 12/25/10(Sat)20:18 No.411311
>>411307
no, the bevel gear turns the very bottom of the heart only, while the core that's inside the heart is stationary. the bottom gear of the heart alone turns all of the other gears
>> dan 12/25/10(Sat)20:20 No.411312
needless to say, you WOULD have to modify the bevel gear slightly, so as to allow a stationary pole to rise through the turning gear of the bevel box, inside a secondary pole attached to the bevel gear that will turn.... does that make sense?
>> Anonymous 12/25/10(Sat)20:54 No.411313
>>411311
>>411312
Ahh! I see now. I was getting the bevel gear confused with the inner box of the heart.
So, you would have to have a stationary pole coming up from the box that goes through a hole in the bottom gear and attaches to the heart core.
Then inside that, you'd have the rotating pole attached to the bottom gear.

So all we're really missing in this thread is plans for the box and poles.

the stationary pole would have to be INSIDE the rotating pole. i think the only real thing missing in this thread is the heart's core, cus i think the bottom gear is included in the plans.

No. I built a working model of the gear sphere with the stationary pole on the outside about half a year ago. It would have to be significantly stronger that it would be than if it was on the outside though.

Unfortunately, after I attatched the box on the bottom, the sphere wouldn't work anymore. The materials for the box weren't strong enough to spin the rod. The crank was completely destroyed when I tried to spin it. Maybe if I made the model smaller....

How did that work with the stationary on the outside? How did the rotating pole attach to the bottom gear then?
>> dan 12/26/10(Sun)22:29 No.411453
>>411374
ok, i still don't quite understand how that core works. obviously, its a little different than the one in the youtub video (the one with the japanese lookin dude). this one has a small dodecahedron inside a larger dodecahedron, with spokes attached to both, and then the spokes go THROUGH the bottom part of each heart gear (but not glued, thus making the gear moveable), and THEN attached to the top part of the gear (glued at the rim)? is that..... right?
>> Anonymous 12/27/10(Mon)01:15 No.411476
>>411439
The bottom gear simply rotates around the stationary pole. The stationary pole connects to the core. The rotating pole connects to the TOP gear. Of course, this will put more stress on the rotating pole, so you have to make it stronger. This also means that you have to make the crank significantly stronger too, which is where I failed.

You will also have to put a stopper under the bottom gear to stop it from falling down.

This is how I did it. I personally like this method better, since you don't have to look at the spinning rod, but its probably more difficult this way.

This same kind of thread is posted here about once every month. Please read the following post & spread the word.

This, >>410377 , does not work. However, it LOOKS just fine. It was posted here by MsRaynsford- he made no comments about the matter. He simply gave a link to the pdf, no instructions, no words.

After building, I built it myself as well, it turns out the gears did not spin. He made a very nice replica- (The teeth of the gears were uneven, and unequal- the rotations between each gear was not at rotatable angles). Therefore, we can call it a sculpture- but not a working gear-twisting heart. It looks nice, but you have to get past the fact it won't ever spin.

The original- and only working model of the Gears Heart was made by Kamikara. He made it as an art piece, not a papercraft to be distributed.

I think this place could benefit by becoming a trading post of sorts (if everyone was willing to play along). Those who have legitimately rare models or models that need to be purchased could give a list of rare or sold models that they need. The only way to make that happen is by having two axles from the box, probably one on the inside which is connected to the inner core and then probably the bottom of the box, and a pipe around it which connects to the bottom gear and the gear in the box. That is also a rather easy thing to do.

Is this the $40 model from:
https://sites.google.com/site/msraynsford/papergearheart
... or is your pdfs from the files in:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SRR79COT ??

I didn't see any instructions in any of the megaupload links in this thread? Did I miss something? Oh, and many humble THANKS!

Yeah, I didn't see any PDF instructions either... which link has them. By the way, you rock! Ever since Christmas this place has become more the place it should have been all along. Thank you Anon and all the other contributors here in the past month!
>> Anonymous 01/19/11(Wed)18:15 No.415494
Together, we anon can totally say: "Fuck you closed forums! Fuck you, mercenaries!" Acts like the one from the anon who posted are the things that make me believe in the mankind.

I agree that we all bow before you and praise that the Christmas spirit still survives here. But 'closed' forums?? Most of the forums I know are quite open, they just require that NOT be a dick (ensured by not being anonymous), you 'do something' (which the respectful posts/questions here would qualify there). There are definite benefits here that cannot be enjoyed there (at least not as openly), but likewise there are benefits there that are not found here. Point is, the smart modeller makes use of all resources (/po/, forums, Google, Tineye, Wayback Machine, etc).

Anyway, allow me to add my thanks to Anon, and to dub thee the Patron Saint of Papercraft! This is definitely EPIC!

What i mean is that if we stay together in one place sharing what we have is better than have to post in an forum that isn't in your language, like a freak to get one password to get one papercraft. Acts like the one from Tavi, if done here constantly by who can help us, is the way to a better internet

This can be and has been a good place (at least for the past month or so - much WIN). But I doubt you have belonged to very many forums (if any). I belong to six different forums (only 2 in a language I know), and I have NEVER had to offer a new password for every model I get. I just have to log in each time I visit after shutting down my computer and get back on. If that is a problem then you are lazy. Many don't have a post minimum, to access anything, and I guarantee most here have made more than 10 posts here. I could ask 10 questions here and then ask 10 questions there and I know more of them would be answered there than here.

Granted, the model in this thread is a great example why no one should abandon this board as a resource, but you have some misconceptions about the 'forums' and are missing out on another easy source for much WIN.

I should note that Tavi still hasn't delivered the final and critical element... the instructions. He forgot to post the link that he said he posted. Without them this model may very well be useless.

try any specialty paper shops in your area.

Hey. It says 110 lb paper in A4 size. I found Letter sized paper which I can cut down to A4 size, but the heaviest weight is 67 lbs. And then of course I have 110 lb Letter sized cardstock. Should I just scale it down? Or use 67 lb paper?
>> Anonymous 01/26/11(Wed)17:25 No.416912
edit: when i said "letter sized paper i can cut down", i meant legal size. lol

The model seem very big, Anyone know what is the size of the outcome. Was thinking to print out in half-size, anyone tried before?
>> Anonymous 01/26/11(Wed)19:58 No.416929
Hmm. Well, I've been moving some parts around in GIMP, and have fixed it so that I'm able to print it out on letter sized paper, without changing the scale of the model. I'll post it up once I'm finished with it, for those who want it.
